  • Ground Source Heat Pump (Retrofit)

This 2000m² historic family home situated to the east of Loch Fyne was completed in 1907.  It is still primarily a family home but for most of the year, the larger reception rooms are available for corporate events such as wedding receptions and conferences.  It has featured in many TV and films.

In December 2005, architect David Sumsion commissioned IHS to design a heat pump system for the property to be integrated with the property’s existing central heating system.

A 90kW (Terra MAX) heat pump is installed into the building and connected to a 1500 litre Hygienik Tank.  A borehole was drilled into a water-holding gravel layer and the used water discharged into a lake into the garden.  Due to unstable running sand at lower levels, the well is only 18 meters deep but nevertheless produces water at 9.6-10˚C.  The heat pump is connected to a 1500 litre Hygienik Tank which is heated to 55˚C.  From there, water is circulated through the 100 year-old central heating system which has cast iron radiators (and therefore most compatible with low temperature heat pumps).  The heating system extends into a self-catering holiday apartment on the ground floor of the house.
