Highland House

This Highlands-based home was designed by David Somerville Architects who were commissioned by the owner to incorporate an unusually high ratio of glass to blend its interior with the rural setting in which it’s located.

The one and a half storey house is approximately 150m² and is largely open-plan downstairs.

Heating System

The heating system was designed to incorporate a 12kW HGL reversible heat pump.  The high level of glazing means that the building can heat up like a greenhouse so the heat pump can also be reversed to cool down the building if required.  It’s incorporated with a 500 litre Hygienik Tank and all of this provides full heating and hot water requirements in the house.  IHS also supplied the underfloor heating.

The client has also incorporated a wood-burning stove and solar thermal panels. This delivers the benefit of enhanced system efficiency and offers a year-round hot water and heating top-up solution.
